What We Do

Bringing together all forensic disciplines in Ghana

The Ghana Association of Forensic Science (GAFS) is a non-profit professional organization established to uphold professional standards, promote the study, and elevate the recognition of forensic science as a unique discipline. Membership is open to professionals worldwide who have a keen interest in forensic sciences.

The Association is divided into sections that represent various areas of forensic examination, including Anthropology, Medical, Odontology, Biology, Chemistry, Documents, Engineering, Firearms, and Toxicology.

Forensic scientists are frequently involved in investigating crimes against individuals and property, such as homicides, assaults, arson, impaired driving, and fraud. They also provide expert testimony in both criminal and civil cases, as well as in coroner’s inquests, offering opinions based on forensic examinations. In criminal law, forensic science plays a key role in determining the guilt or innocence of the accused. In civil litigation, forensic science is crucial for resolving a wide range of legal matters through the identification, analysis, and evaluation of physical evidence. Special committees within the GAFS focus on addressing educational, scientific, and legal concerns within the field of forensic science, providing advisory support to both local and national justice authorities.
