The Truth About Forensic Science

Many people are fascinated by the fast-paced and evolving field of forensic science. This
growing interest is partly driven by the influence of popular crime and forensic science TV
shows. While these shows are designed for entertainment rather than education, they have
shaped public perception of the field often leading to misunderstandings about what forensic science truly involves and the career opportunities it offers. Conversations with people of all ages reveal that there are many misconceptions about forensic science and crime investigation.

What Exactly is Forensic Science?
The term forensic comes from the Latin word ‘forensis’, which refers to public debate or discussion. In modern terms, forensics relates to the judicial system and the use of science in the legal process. Essentially, forensic science is the application of scientific principles and methods to matters of law. A key element of forensic science is its foundation in science
forensic scientists are not only tasked with analysing and interpreting evidence but may also be required to present their findings in court as expert witnesses.

The Role of Forensic Science
Forensic science is widely used to uphold laws, resolve disputes, assign responsibility, and enhance public safety. Since scientific evidence is now a regular feature in legal cases,
various stakeholders including lawyers, judges, law enforcement officials, and the public need to understand both the potential and the limitations of forensic science.

Forensic scientists employ advanced scientific techniques to evaluate and interpret evidence in both criminal and civil cases. In criminal law, forensic science can be crucial in determining guilt or innocence. In civil cases, it can help resolve a wide range of legal issues by identifying, analysing, and assessing physical evidence.

A Multidisciplinary Field
Forensic science draws upon knowledge and techniques from several scientific fields,
including Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
